I learnt from a friend during one of those music debates on lyrical content that while listening to music, you either get educated or entertained. That should be close to ten years now but it stuck like most of what we were taught in primary school. Personally, lyricism wows me and it’s what exactly what gets me entertained. It’s always orgasmic when a good beat is laced with a dope flow, catchy hook, message and wordplay. I dare say after years of hip-hop in Nigeria, No one does these like Duno.
Hip Hop has been lukewarm in the country for a while now, it only becomes talked about when there’s a beef between rappers or a challenge comes up online. Benin City is not known to follow trends, judging by artistes who have popped from here, they foster trends and are usually rappers.
Duno is one of the City’s export with a distinctive sound which makes him stand out and seem timeless. Still sounds as smooth as he sounded in his Supreme Kartel days when he featured in Sanchez’s “After Party” song from the 100% Benin City album. Yes, Duno has spent that long in the game despite his on and off involvement.
On “Too Many” he reminds us why he should be taken seriously even when he has been busy with his day job and stacking multiple degrees.
Produced by US based NUUGAME, the social commentary song is the first single from “The Love Conference” album and it had Duno touching economics, politics, pan-Africanism, feminism and religion without sounding too preachy.
What the world needs, is a little more love,
A little less religion and a lot more God,
A little more tolerance, a lot less wars
A lot less poverty, a lot more jobs
A little more hope, and a little more faith
A little more tenderness and less hate
A little more food in a lot more plate
And a lot more youths recognizing that are great
This is a well executed track that could inspire one to enact change. A breath of fresh air in a stuffy environment.
We know they are one “Too Many” songs on your playlist right now but they should be a lot more space for this Duno’s effort
