“Have you fucking lost your mind?” Kelvin barked at Phoebe as his eyes burned in rage while Phoebe remained quiet on her seat as she fumbled with the handle of her bag.
“I’m outta here. I can’t stand a minute with this..” he snapped and made to leave
“C’mon Kelvin, you can’t just leave. Why are you being so paranoid?” Natasha retorted
“Oh really? Now I’m being paranoid. You heard this cheeky bitch ins..”
“I hope it isn’t me you’re referring to?” Phoebe cut in with a surprising courage
“Who else would it be..”
“Cut the crap man. What is wrong with you, why are you acting like a sissy?” Brown shunned his friend
“How dare you man, is that supposed to be a compliment?” he turned to Phoebe “I’m sure you’re aware this is all your fault, If you hadn’t showed up your ugly face, my friends won’t be calling me names because of you”
This guy is trying me oo, has somebody told him that I’m a Benin girl and Benin no dey carry las
“You’re very stupid for that..”
“You guys should stop this!..” Natasha stood up in frustration but they kept looking at each other in spite
“There’s no point babe. Let’s just go and leave them to rattle on” Brown drew her back and led her out of the sitting room
“You’d better get the hell out of here now. You’ve made my friends upset”
“I’m going no where, this is my friend’s house. Until she tells me to go, I’ll remain here” a smirk crossed her face as she took seat and crossed her legs
“Oh blimey! What sort of a bitch is this?” Kelvin cursed under his breath as he watched her sit on the couch opposite him and cross her legs.
As he stared at her, he realized he hadn’t actually seen her, he had only looked at her.
She had a straight and light skinned face with pointed nose, an enticingly beautiful almond shaped eyes, perfectly arched brows, high cheekbones, full lips, heart shaped face, she was indeed beautiful yet so cheeky, can’t she just shut up and act like a civilized human atleast?
“Why are you staring at me like you’ve seen a ghost?” Phoebe broke into his thoughts
“Well, maybe I have. And an ugly one at that”
Phoebe gazed at him with fire burning in her eyes “If you think you can make me leave with all of your schemes, I’m sorry you’re only fooling yourself. I won’t leave here until Natasha says so” she straightened on her chair and relaxed back on her seat while Kelvin stared at her in awe.
Phoebe’s mother sat on a low stool in the verandah of the house washing clothes. She scrubbed the clothes in a narrow bucket and threw them into a another bucket at her left handside as she went about her work, she was singing melodiously.
The clothes were very few and in no time she was done, she attempted to carry the bucket of dirty sud water to throw away but her left leg got stuck and she groaned in pain as the stiffness and pain became worse. The bucket fell from her hand and spilled everywhere on the ground, she started shouting in pain. When she couldn’t bear it anymore she slumped into the wet ground and held her legs as she kept screaming in pain.
“Somebody help me oo… Ehhh, make una come help me oo.. My leg oo” she lamented in grief
“Mama Osato, wetin happen?” a man and a woman appeared
“My leg oo” she replied as tears rolled down her cheeks
“Make we carry her go hospital, Eh Osanobua” the man carried her up
“Go find cab, fast fast” the woman ran out immediately.
“I am not an unemployed sassy as you call it, I’m a Business Consultant, if you must know dumbhead” Phoebe replied Kelvin’s comment of her being unemployed and lazying around.
“Oh really? a business consultant you say or like the one who helps those petty traders sell their wares, what do you call it again? Erhm.. sales representative! Isn’t it?” he chuckled
This was an insult yet Phoebe didn’t see it as such, surprisingly she wasn’t mad at his statement maybe because she was seeing him laugh for the first time and oh boy! his laugh was so alluring and revealed his perfectly arranged set of sparkingly teeth. Immediately her phone began to ring, she gripped her bag from the table and searched for her phone until she found it. She glanced at the screen of her phone, the caller was unknown, she ignored it but it kept on ringing for a while as she refused to answer.
“Why aren’t you picking your calls?”
“It’s none of your business, dumbhead” she hissed
“Do you know if it’s an emergency? You’re truly a cheeky bitch” he shook his head
Can you just shut up? Why is he now acting like he cares….. Mtttchewww
Her phone kept on ringing for the next five minutes until she reluctantly answered it
“Hello… my mother?.. Oh my God! What happened?…. Which hospital?… Okay, thank you, I’m coming right away.. “
“What’s the problem?”
“It’s my mother, she has been rushed to the hospital, I think she suffered stoke” Phoebe picked up her bag and made to leave
“Oh my! I’m so sorry about that”
“It’s okay, I need to leave now, please tell Natasha I left already..”
“Let me drop you off in my car”
“No, you don’t have to”
“I insist” Phoebe stared at him in utter shock.
“Your mother suffered from Osteoarthritis” the Doctor of Healing hands Hospital said to her as she sat in his office
“Whatever is that Doctor?”
“Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down. The wearing down of the protective tissue at the ends of bones usually occur gradually and worsens over time” he explained
“What could have caused it, Doctor?”
“They’re many causes of Arthritis ranging from age, genetic factors, weight, joint injury, diet and so on”
“Is there any chance of this being cured totally?”
“Yes but it’s a gradual process. She would have to exercise more often, lose a bit of weight, undergo therapy and I’ll prescribe some drugs for her. Also, whenever the pain comes she has to apply either a hot or cold substance on her joint to ease the pain and reduce swelling, she can make use of walking aids and maintain good posture always.”
“Alright, thank you Doctor. Can I see her now?”
“No you can’t, she’s currently under sedative”
“Alright. I’ll wait outside”
She walked out of the Doctor’s office and saw Kelvin waiting patiently at the waiting room that was filled with patients and family members with some nurses. She hated the smell of hospital, the smell nauseated her.
As she approached Kelvin who wasn’t aware of her presence as he was looking the other way, she stole the chance to study him. He was really cute, tall, broad shoulders with a soul trenching eyes that could penetrate even the most opaque thing. He turned to catch her before she tapped him
“How’s your mom?”
“She’s fine. The Doctor said I can’t see her now, she’s asleep”
“Thank you so much, Kelvin for your help and support. I really appreciate” she smiled genuinely
“How come I’ve never seen you smile” he smiled back
“You should ask yourself again”
“Am I really that bad?”
“You’re even worse” they laughed
It’s so amusing that something bad produced something good. This dumbhead rude boy is actually cool and I like him,
Phoebe smiled as she watched him crack dry jokes.
